Discover Meaningful Insights with Prescience Diagnostics’s Advanced Genetic Testing

Understanding Genetic Testing and Its Impact on Health

Over one million patients and healthcare professionals have trusted Prescience Diagnostics to deliver actionable insights through genetic testing. With more than two decades of experience in diagnosing rare diseases and conditions, we provide precise, easy-to-understand results that help guide clinical decisions and enhance understanding of your genetic health.

Genes serve as our body’s instruction manual for growth, development, and function. When there are changes—called variants—in your DNA, they can sometimes lead to medical conditions or developmental challenges.

In some cases, a healthcare provider may identify a condition based on symptoms alone. However, many times, genetic testing is essential to uncover an accurate diagnosis. Because many health conditions have a genetic basis, testing can provide a clearer picture of what’s going on and help inform better treatment and care.

Where to find support resources

Genetic testing options like genome and exome sequencing provide very comprehensive searches for genetic changes across a person’s genetic information all at once, potentially enabling your healthcare provider to reach a diagnosis faster without multiple testing steps.

What Results Can Genetic Testing Reveal?

The results from genetic testing can fall into several distinct categories.

Positive (Diagnostic Result)

A known genetic variant has been identified that explains the symptoms or confirms a specific genetic disorder.

Negative (Non-Diagnostic Result)

No relevant genetic changes were found. Your provider may consider further testing based on your clinical history.

Variant of Uncertain Significance (VUS)

A genetic variant was found, but current research can’t yet determine if it’s connected to your condition. Your provider may suggest additional steps.

Secondary Findings

Occasionally, we discover genetic changes unrelated to your current symptoms but which may impact your future health (e.g., cancer or cardiac risk). These are optional and appear in roughly 3% of cases. Before testing, you and your provider will discuss whether you'd like to receive this type of information.

Informed Consent: Your Rights and Responsibilities

Before testing begins, patients (or their legal guardians) must give informed consent. This ensures you understand the benefits, limitations, and potential risks associated with testing. Prescience Diagnostics’s consent form also allows you to opt in or out of secondary findings, and future contact regarding research participation or use of de-identified data.
